Our mom of the month program honors moms for their efforts to lead healthy lifestyles, and gives us a chance to get to know them better at the same time!

September's featured "Mom of the Month" is: Anna Lyden
Congrats Anna!

Anna has been a Stroller Strides member since early this year, and has made great strides in fitness this year.  She works hard at every workout she attends and has been one of our most frequently attendees this summer.  She sets a great example of all of us and does so with a smile.  We are glad to have Anna and her son Camden as part of our program!

Join us in congratulating Anna and read on to get to know her a little better.

Members of your Family:
My husband Cahal and my son Camden (14 months)

Tell us about your children:
My son, Camden, was born in June of 2013.  He is very funny and we are starting to see more and more of his personality every day.

Current/previous Career:
Before I was a stay at home mom with Cam, I worked as a compliance officer with AXA Advisors.

What was your childhood ambition?
to be a veterinarian

What does motherhood mean to you?
Motherhood is the most wonderful and bittersweet experience of my life.  I didn't realize just how much love I could have for this tiny person who was brand new to my life and that love only grows more and more everyday.  I feel very lucky and proud to be a mom.

What is the furthest you have been from home?
Costa Rica for our honeymoon.

What has Stroller Strides done for you (or meant to you)?
Stroller Strides has been great with getting back in shape.  Even more than that, the class has provided a great way to socialize with other moms and for Camden to get to interact and play with other kids.

What is your favorite exercise?
I don't know if I have a favorite exercise, specifically, but I like anything that helps firm up the buns.

What is your proudest moment?
I feel proud every single day when I see my son growing, learning, and starting to figure things out on his own.  My favorite moment right now, is seeing how sweet of a boy he is when he leans in to give me a kiss.

What are three of your favorite things (besides your family!)?
the beach, my dog, and chocolate

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us or makes you unique.
I am certified in scuba diving, although I haven't gone in quite a while.

If we asked your spouse what they think your best qualities are, what would they say?
I just asked him and he said my sense of humor, that I'm down to earth, responsible, have good morals, and am a nurturing mom.

What advice would you give to moms looking to get back into shape?
I would tell them to be patient, have faith, and just stick with it.  In time you will start to feel stronger and you will start to see your body get back in shape.  It just takes a little bit of time and commitment.

August's featured "Mom of the Month" is: Jennifer Frederick
Congrats Jennifer!

Jennifer has been participating in our Body Back health & fitness program for moms since early 2013.  She has made amazing strides in her health & fitness and brought a great energy and joy to her workouts and to our group of moms.  She recently beat all local "plank" records accomplishing a 20 (!!!) minute plank at Body Back.  She works hard at every workout, with a smile.  We are glad to have her as part of our program!

Join us in congratulating Jennifer and read on to get to know her a little better!

Hometown: Pink Hill, NC (A small farm town outside Kinston, NC)

Current part of the Triangle that you live in: Apex

Education: BS in Nutrition at East Carolina University

Body Back Member since: I started Body Back in early 2013

Members of your Family: My husband Chris and I have two sweet boys, Owen just turned 5 in July and Nathan is 2 1/2 and will be 3 Valentine's Day!

Tell us about your children: Owen starts kindergarten this year and is such a fun and loving little guy.  He can make friends with anyone and his favorite place to be is at the beach.  Nate is in an early preschool program and loves being the class helper.  He loves his big brother and wants to do everything he does.  Their latest obsession is playing Mario Kart Wii :)

Current/previous Career: Before moving to NC 2 years ago we lived in DC and I worked for a Venture Capital Firm.  I stayed home with the boys for a while then started working part time doing HR/Operations for a Recruiting firm.

What was your childhood ambition? I always wanted to be in the medical field but found out early in college that I didn't have the stomach for nursing school...so I choose Nutrition.

What does motherhood mean to you? Being a mom means the world to me.  It's the hardest and the most rewarding thing I have ever done.  I couldn't imagine my life without my crazy boys.

What is the furthest you have been from home? Probably Hawaii, and for me who does not like flying, it was huge for me to fly that far.

What has Body Back done for you? Gosh, where to begin!  Body Back has changed my life, I couldn't imagine my weeks without seeing these ladies and the awesome workouts.  It has provided me with not only the physical exercise program to reach my goals but also the support of other moms that are trying to reach the same goals as me.  I have not only lost 20lbs since I started but I have muscle and am in better shape than I was before I had kids.  I am not a gym person and get bored with the same workout day in and out and with the body back program, I look forward to class each week and it's exciting to do workouts that I never though I would do...and accomplish goals (like my 20 min plank) that i never though I could do.  I am a stronger mom, healthier mom and most important a better mom!

What is your favorite exercise?  I love planks, may sound strange but it's one of the few exercises that you can do that targets most muscle groups.  Then would be tuck-ups on the ball, v-sit twists and lunges.

What is your proudest moment?  My 20 min plank for sure! I worked so hard to get to my goal and I passed it!

What are three of your favorite things (besides your family!)? Family beach trips, shopping and sushi.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us or makes you unique. Let's see...maybe that there isn't one vegetable that I don't like! I grew up vegetarian for the first 18 years of my life and grew to love everything...even the weird ones!

If we asked your spouse what they think your best qualities are, what would they say? Kindness and consideration of others, and that I am always smiling :)

What advice would you give to moms looking to get back into shape? Try Body Back!! No matter what shape you are in, this is the most supportive group of moms you will find.  From the food guidance, great workouts and always having a group of girls that you can talk to through your journey means everything.  And at the end of the session, you will be shocked at the inches lost!

May's featured "Mom of the Month" is: Liz Fulton

Congrats Liz!

Liz has been a Stroller Strides member for the past year, and works out weekly with our Durham moms at Southpoint and Herndon Park. Liz has been such a wonderful addition to our Stroller Strides family.  Her laughter is hard not to join in with and make you feel like she was your friend from the first "hello". It's certainly easy to see why Cole is so full of life and why he is so generous with the high fives.  Liz is a great mom and it has been such a joy to see her family embark on a new chapter when we all get to meet Baby Boy Fulton very soon!!  Please join us in congratulating Liz and read on to get to know her a little better!

I am a Virginia Tech grad (2007) and majored in Communications

June (I think??) 2013

Members of your Family:

My husband is Michael, 2 year old son Cole, and our dogs Daisy and

Gryffin. Son #2 is coming in June!

Tell us about your children:

Cole turned 2 in April and is a happy rambunctious toddler. He loves everything with wheels, especially Thomas the train, and running as much as he can!

Current/previous Career:

I worked at CA Technologies doing communications for the support team. Customer letters, newsletters, presentations, etc.

What was your childhood ambition?

To be a teacher

What does motherhood mean to you?

Motherhood is the career I was always meant to have. It is challenging, yet fun at the same time. I didn’t know how much love I would feel until I became a mother and it is extremely rewarding for me.

What is the furthest you have been from home?

Hawaii

What has Stroller Strides or meant to you?

When first joining Stroller Strides it was about being able to exercise without finding childcare for Cole. It’s still a good workout, but now it’s more about being part of a community of supportive moms. I have gained so much from the friends I’ve made through this group!

What is your favorite exercise?

Wall sits, not because I love them, but because I feel the burn afterwards so I know it’s working on something!

What is your proudest moment?

Running a marathon when Cole was only 11 months old

What are three of your favorite things (besides your family!)?

Watching movies, baking, and photography

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us or makes you

unique.

Before we were parents, in 2008 we hosted an 8 year old girl from

Minsk, Belarus for a summer in the Children of Chernobyl program through

our church. We have stayed in touch with her family and occasionally send

messages to them through facebook.

If we asked your spouse what they think your best qualities are, what would

they say?

I thought it would be easiest to ask him! He says, “You are a real

person, never fake. You are the most unselfish person I know, everything

you say and do always has everyone else’s best interest in mind. And you

are a very classy person.”

What advice would you give to moms looking to get back into shape?

Just start small! Getting back into shape doesn’t happen quickly, but if

you make it a priority in your life, it will come! Surround yourself with

positive influences who know your goals and will be supportive of them.

Sophie is so busy right now. She is into everything and loves to explore and learn. She also makes us laugh all the time. Owen and Sophie play really well together and enjoy spending most of their time outside.

Current/previous Career: Account manager at a commercial insurance company

What was your childhood ambition? To be a teacher, not sure what happened there.

What does motherhood mean to you? The most special and challenging gift I have ever been given and means everything to me. My children are my world and I cannot imagine not being their mom. They have taught me so much and have changed my life in so many wonderful ways.

What is the furthest you have been from home? Istanbul, Turkey or maybe Kos, Greece. Not sure which is furthest.

What has Stroller Strides done for you (or meant to you)? I wasn't a SAHM until Sophie was born and it was a hard transition for me.  When I found Stroller Strides it got me out of the house, helped me get into shape without even knowing it and as a bonus I have met some amazing moms!

What has your experience with Body Back been like? It is a great workout where I have gotten in even better shape, met more amazing moms and got to workout without passing food to my toddler the whole time.

What is your favorite exercise? Anything ab related.

What is your proudest moment? As far as fitness, it would be proudly fitting into a strapless bridesmaids dress for my little brother's wedding only 8mo after Sophie was born, having it taken in at least two sizes, not looking half bad (thanks to Stroller Strides and Body Back)

What are three of your favorite things (besides your family!)? The beach, a long run or walk by myself and a good glass of wine with my girlfriends!

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us or makes you unique. I have a secret obsession with cheesy Hallmark movies.

If we asked your spouse what they think your best qualities are, what would they say?  He would probably say that I am good mom and he calls me "master controller" but I am not so sure that is a good thing;)

What advice would you give to moms looking to get back into shape? It is so much more fun to work out in a group and you will not regret it!

March Mom of the Month

Our mom of the month program honors moms for their efforts to lead healthy lifestyles, and gives us a chance to get to know them better at the same time!

March's featured Mom of the Month is Amanda Austin!

Congrats, Amanda!

Amanda joined Stroller Strides over a year ago, and has become one of our most dedicated and frequent attendees.  And her hard work has paid off in terms of her health & fitness, as she's dropped over 25 pounds since joining us last year!  She also completed our advanced summer running challenge last year-- 120 miles in 60 days!  Which helped her beat a previous race PR from when she was 21 years old that summer.  ;)  All of her hard work has helped her get to a place where she can use her old clothes (that are now too big) as maternity clothes without having to shop... because she is now expecting baby #2, she just announced!  Join us in congratulating Amanda (on many levels) and read on to get to know her a little better.

Hometown: Clinton, NY (It's a small town outside of Utica)

Current part of the Triangle that you live in: Holly Springs

Education: I received my undergrad degree from Siena College in American Studies and have a Master of Arts in Teaching degree and Master of International Studies degree (completed that at NC State - Go Wolfpack)!

Stroller Strides Member since: February 2013

Members of your Family: Nate (my husband), Cullen (my son), Tek and Tessie (our cats), and our second little Austin is due at the end of September!

Tell us about your children: Cullen will be 2 on April 4th.  He loves being outside and all things that have wheels and a motor!  We are waiting to hear if our second with be a boy or girl and look forward to meeting him or her later this year.

Current/previous Career: I taught social studies at the middle school level for about 3 years before having Cullen.

What was your childhood ambition? It changed constantly! I think the one I stuck with the longest was to be a marine biologist... but clearly that changed too at some point.

What does motherhood mean to you? More than I ever thought it would.  I always knew that I wanted children but never knew how much I would enjoy it!

What is the furthest you have been from home? Kenya.  I went there in June of 2010 with Habitat for Humanity: Global Village.  We did a 2 week build in a small town called Chuka and then went on a short safari in Masai Mara.

What has Stroller Strides done for you (or meant to you)? Since I started Stroller Strides last year, I finally took off about 25 pounds of extra weight that I had put on after moving to NC back in 2006.  Also I am pretty sure my arms haven't been this toned since I was about 13 years old! There is still room for improvement of course, but I am very happy with where I am at!

What is your favorite exercise? Resisted side steps and anything else I can feel burning!

What is your proudest moment? Completing the 120 miles in 60 days last summer.  And beating my previous course record on the 15K race I run each July (my previous best was set when I was 21 years old).  I think doing the 120 challenge played a huge role in achieving that.

What are three of your favorite things (besides your family!)? Campfires, watching the thousands of fireflies in my parents backyard whenever I visit them during the summer, and walking on the beach first thing in the morning.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us or makes you unique. One of my life goals is to become an Adirondack 46er.  You attain this status when you hike the 46 highest peaks of the Adirondack Mountains.  I did my first one when I was 4 years old but haven't hit many more since and plan to start over as an adult anyway.

If we asked your spouse what they think your best qualities are, what would they say? Probably that I like watching sports and drinking craft beer almost as much as he does! After typing that answer, I asked him.  He said he likes my hair and my smile. I think he would have gone with the beer and sports thing if he had thought about it longer! =-)

What advice would you give to moms looking to get back into shape? Just get out and do it.  There are many days that I really don't feel like going out for a run but not once have I regretted it afterward!
